BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Rio Grande Valley municipal leaders and infrastructure professionals met in Brownsville to discuss regional approaches to aging water systems, including the challenge of securing funding for major improvements.
The workshop, led by LISC San Antonio, brought together mayors, city council members and engineering firms to discuss problems such as aging pipes, water pressure and contamination risks, according to a report on the meeting.
San Benito Commissioner Daniel Cortez said regional planning could improve local governments’ chances of qualifying for larger grants. He said some projects, such as a water plant serving more than one community, may be more practical through collaboration.
Funding remains a central challenge, he said. The session focused on possible ways cities could coordinate planning and pursue resources for long-term water infrastructure needs.
