BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The Texas Southmost College women’s cross country team is climbing the national rankings after a strong showing at the UIW Invitational.
The Scorpions moved up to No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll, marking one of the nation’s largest jumps this season.
TSC was unranked in the preseason poll and is the only team currently in the top 10 that was not previously ranked among the top 25.
The ranking reflects the team’s strong start to the season against a competitive field.
Freshman Emily Ortiz has emerged as one of the Scorpions’ top runners. At the UIW Invitational, she posted a team-best time of 18:44.60 in the women’s 5K race.
The TSC men’s cross country team is also gaining recognition, receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll.
Both TSC cross country teams return to action Thursday at the Clifton Gilliard Invite in Prairie View.
