South Padre Island Residents Raise Concerns Over AEP Texas Mobile Skid Plan

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Some South Padre Island residents are raising concerns about a temporary AEP Texas mobile skid planned as part of electric infrastructure work on the island.

KRGV reported that the mobile skid would serve as a temporary transmission station intended to help maintain power reliability while AEP Texas upgrades a substation. The utility said the equipment would act as a backup contingency to help avoid long outages during the work.

Residents who spoke at an information session raised concerns about the proposed location near homes and environmentally sensitive areas. AEP Texas told residents the equipment would be used only when needed and would produce minimal noise.

South Padre Island City Manager Randy Smith said reliable power is a time-sensitive issue for the island during the summer. The equipment is expected to be temporary and removed after about a year and a half.
