Coffee Road Reconstruction Underway in Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A full reconstruction project is underway on Coffee Road, with the city planning roadway, drainage, sidewalk and utility improvements along the corridor.

The 12-month project will convert Coffee Road from a rural-style roadway into an urban street with curb and gutter. Plans include a new center turn lane intended to improve traffic flow and access to nearby properties.

The project will also add an ADA-compliant sidewalk on the north side of the road and a shared-use path on the south side for pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized users. The path will connect to the Brownsville Historic Battlefield Hike and Bike Trail.

Drainage improvements include a new storm drainage system that will connect to the existing resaca system and the drainage ditch along the Battlefield Trail. Utility work will include replacing older water lines and upgrading wastewater mains.

The city said the total project investment is $4.52 million, with $3.23 million from the City of Brownsville for street and drainage work and $1.28 million from the Brownsville Public Utilities Board for water and wastewater upgrades.
