The City of Brownsville is officially a Tourism Friendly Texas City! The Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office, a division of the Governor’s Office, recently presented City leaders with the prestigious designation that affirms Brownsville’s status as a premier destination in South Texas.

This recognition follows a rigorous six-month application process led by the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and Office of Space Commerce, which included the submission of visitor data, hotel occupancy tax reports, tourism economic impact assessments, event programming, and documentation of strategic partnerships and industry leadership. Brownsville is the only City in Cameron and Hidalgo counties to hold this statewide honor.

“We are honored to receive the Tourism Friendly Texas City designation from Travel Texas,” said Mayor John Cowen, Jr., City of Brownsville. “This recognition resonates with our commitment to creating warm and memorable experiences for those that choose to make Brownsville their vacation destination in South Texas. Visitors to our City can enjoy the launch of Starship rockets at SpaceX to our world-renowned Gladys Porter Zoo and unique authentic cuisine. Brownsville is ready to welcome visitors.”

The “Tourism Friendly” designation highlights Brownsville’s vibrant cultural scene, rich history, ecotourism attractions like the resaca trails and nature centers, and major landmarks including the Mitte Cultural District and the Gulf Coast. It also strengthens Brownsville’s access to state-level tourism marketing programs, funding opportunities, and industry partnerships.

“Brownsville’s growing tourism industry is driven by strong collaboration between our local businesses, hospitality partners, and cultural institutions,” said Helen Ramirez, ICMA-CM, AICP, Brownsville City Manager. “We are all united by a shared goal of creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. Our Convention and Visitors Bureau plays a vital role in showcasing the rich diversity of attractions that define our City. I congratulate our CVB Team for helping us achieve the Tourism Friendly Texas City designation.”

The designation reflects the City’s strategic efforts to expand tourism through small business support, historic preservation, community events, and sustainable tourism initiatives. It also acknowledges the critical support provided by State Representatives Erin Gamez and Janie Lopez, and the continued leadership from City Manager Helen Ramirez.

This achievement positions Brownsville as a leader in Texas tourism and will be leveraged across all marketing channels, trade shows, and public outreach efforts to further enhance the city’s visibility and visitor appeal.
