BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Texas Southmost College celebrated its legacy and the generations of Scorpions who have called the institution home during Generations Day on Sept. 14 at the Oliveira Student Services Center.
Part of TSC’s yearlong Centennial Celebration, the event was sponsored by the TSC Foundation and Valley Regional Medical Center. Alumni, multigenerational families and community members gathered to reflect on the college’s lasting impact.
The event included a video presentation featuring alumni, an exhibit of significant moments from TSC’s 100-year history and yearbooks that prompted memories from former students. Visitors also received centennial commemorative items.
TSC Board of Trustees Chair Delia Saenz, who earned an associate degree from the institution in 1971, welcomed former students and families with multigenerational ties to the college. Maria Guadalupe Gomez said four generations of her family have attended TSC.
Elizabeth Ortega, a Valley Regional Medical Center manager who attended TSC beginning in 1987, said the support she received as a young student helped her continue her education. Neida Ruth Soto-Grantland and retired BISD teacher Nelda Rocha also described the college as an accessible starting point for their educational and professional lives.
The exhibit will remain on view on the first floor of the Oliveira Student Services Center through the fall semester and will also be displayed at ITECC near the Central Plaza. Valley Regional Medical Center plans to display the exhibit in its hospital lobby in October.
