RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Nine high-achieving South Texas students have been selected for the seventh cohort of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Physician Assistant Career Track Early Assurance Program, giving them a direct pathway toward careers as physician assistants.
The competitive program allows selected students to begin their undergraduate education at UTRGV as Honors College members and, after completing their degrees and meeting program requirements, earn a guaranteed seat in the university’s Master in Physician Assistant Studies program.
Dr. Angelica Urbina, clinical associate professor in the Department of Physician Assistant and PACT program coordinator, said the newest cohort reflects the program’s goal of identifying and supporting promising students early in their academic careers.
For three members of the cohort, the opportunity brings them closer to careers inspired by personal experiences, family and a desire to serve their communities. Miranda Ibarra, a McAllen Memorial High School graduate, said childhood health challenges helped shape her goal of becoming a physician assistant. Destynee Diane Cuellar said watching her older sister pursue the same profession strengthened her interest in the field. Candice B. Flores said caring for her late father and encouragement from a counselor led her toward healthcare.
The students selected are Miranda Ibarra of McAllen Memorial High School; Michelle Verdines of Harlingen School of Health Professions; Valentina Ramos of Achieve Early College High School; Sofia Zamora of McAllen High School; Henali Patel of Cotulla High School; Mikhaela Dublado and Destynee Cuellar of the UTRGV Mathematics and Science Academy; Minnely Medina of La Joya Early College High School; and Candice Flores of South Texas ISD Health Professions.
UTRGV said the program is designed to prepare students for advanced study and, ultimately, service in communities across the region.
