The new Adventure Course at Camp Rio at Historic Camp Lulu Sams was introduced at a ribbon-cutting that brought together Mayor John Cowen Jr., Camp Rio leaders, school leaders, and BCIC President & CEO Cori Pena.
Funded by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC), the outdoor facility features a rock-climbing wall, a zip line and multiple obstacle elements designed to expand recreation opportunities for residents and visitors in a natural setting.
“The Adventure Course is more than just a structure—it’s a gateway,” Cowen said. “It’s a place where people of all ages can step outside their comfort zones, take healthy risks, and build courage one foothold at a time. This is where someone who once doubted themselves finds their balance.”
“At BCIC, our mission is rooted in improving the quality of life for everyone who calls Brownsville home through investments that promote health, wellness, education and innovation,” Peña said. “We aim to build a city where families can thrive and where opportunities for growth are for everyone.
Camp Director Nancy Mance said the land where the Adventure Course now stands has welcomed girls to camp for decades. With support from IDEA Public Schools, it will now provide outdoor education to thousands more young people.
The Adventure Course will officially open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025. Organizers will provide details on hours, access and participation guidelines at the site.
