The Challenge-RGV returns for 17th year, promotes health in 2026

Get ready to take charge of your health and wellness, The Challenge-RGV is just around the corner! Now in its 17th year, this free community-wide health initiative invites Rio Grande Valley residents to kick off 2026 with healthier habits in a fun and supportive environment.

Hosted by the City of Brownsville’s Department of Health, Wellness, and Animal Services, in partnership with The Challenge-RGV and proudly presented by title sponsor Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC), the Challenge encourages participants to eat better, move more, and feel great throughout the year.

A press conference held on Wednesday, January 14, announced the return of this long-standing tradition and extended a warm invitation to the entire Valley community.

“This initiative is much more than a fitness and weight loss challenge. It aligns perfectly with our One City commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles,” said Mayor John Cowen Jr.

“Through this challenge, we aim to encourage weight loss, but also to educate our community about the importance of prioritizing health and wellness. It gives us an opportunity to instill habits that will lead to a better quality of life now and for future generations,” he added.

Since its launch in 2008, more than 15,000 participants have taken part in The Challenge-RGV, collectively losing over 23,000 pounds. But beyond weight loss, the program is designed to help residents embrace long-term wellness.

“The Challenge-RGV is more than a weight-loss competition; it is an invitation for all of us to get motivated to set healthy habits in 2026,” said Dr. Arturo Rodriguez, Director of Health, Wellness, and Animal Services.

According to data from the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, 84% of past participants have lost weight, with an average weight loss of 8.5 pounds. Experts emphasize that even modest weight loss can have a major health impact.

“We know that losing just 5 to 8 percent of your weight can reduce your risk for chronic diseases like diabetes by 50% and greatly improve your health,” said Dr. Lisa Mitchell-Bennett, UTHealth Houston.

This year’s Challenge also places a renewed emphasis on outdoor activity and mental wellness.

“We’re encouraging everyone to get outside—explore our trails, visit our parks, and enjoy Brownsville’s beautiful weather,” said Dr. Rose Gowen, Chair of BCIC, the Challenge-RGV’s title sponsor. “Whether it’s trying a new activity, visiting a park in your neighborhood, or walking a new trail, it all adds up.”
