Brownsville Invests in Major Traffic Signal Synchronization Project to Improve Mobility

Brownsville has allocated millions of dollars in grant funding to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion citywide through a comprehensive traffic signal synchronization project designed to make traveling through the city easier and more efficient.

The initiative will modernize Brownsville’s traffic infrastructure by upgrading traffic signal systems, enhancing intersection lighting, and developing a private 5G network to improve traffic data collection and communication. These upgrades will allow traffic signals to better respond to real-time traffic conditions, helping reduce delays and improve overall mobility.

The project includes improvements to traffic signals along International Boulevard from East Elizabeth Street to IH 69, and along 12th Street from East St. Charles Street to IH 69. In addition, traffic signal communication development, traffic monitoring, and signal management improvements will be implemented at approximately 215 signalized locations across the city.

Once complete, the upgraded system will provide city traffic engineers with advanced tools to monitor traffic patterns, quickly respond to congestion, and optimize signal timing for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Construction on the traffic signal synchronization project is expected to begin in the fall of 2026. Funding for the project will come from $20 million in grant funding, helping deliver long-term transportation improvements while minimizing the impact on local taxpayers.

City officials say the investment underscores Brownsville’s commitment to smart infrastructure, safety, and enhancing quality of life through more efficient transportation systems.
