Cameron County is set to benefit from a $192.4 million investment to widen State Highway 4 (Boca Chica Boulevard) between Brownsville and Starbase as part of Texas’ newly approved 10-year transportation plan.
The State Highway 4 project is included in the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2027 Unified Transportation Program (UTP) and is scheduled to let for construction in fiscal year 2027. The investment will support improvements along a key transportation corridor connecting Brownsville with the rapidly developing Boca Chica area.
Governor Greg Abbott and TxDOT announced the new statewide transportation plan, which represents a total projected investment of $138 billion over the next decade. The Texas Transportation Commission approved the UTP during its August meeting, including $95 billion for projects statewide and an additional $43 billion for development and routine maintenance.
The statewide plan is designed to improve safety, reduce congestion, strengthen connectivity and support the reliable movement of people and goods. It also includes investments in public transportation, maritime, aviation, rail, freight, international trade, and bicycle and pedestrian connectivity.
For Brownsville and Cameron County, the $192.4 million State Highway 4 widening project represents a significant infrastructure investment in a corridor that plays an increasingly important role in regional mobility and economic activity.
