The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) is enhancing the travelling experience for airline passengers at its 91,000 square-foot, $43.8 million terminal. The enhancements come with the launching of GoodMaps, a state-of-the-art indoor navigation system and accessibility technology now available at the airport, via an App.
GoodMaps enhances wayfinding and accessibility for all travelers, including individuals with visual, mobility, or cognitive impairments. The platform provides detailed indoor maps, real-time location positioning, and turn-by-turn audio directions throughout the terminal, allowing passengers to navigate independently and confidently using their mobile devices.
At a press conference at the airport, Kevin Kline, Community Engagement Representative for GoodMaps and who is visually impaired, gave a live demonstration to attendees and guests of how the navigation system works.
“It’s important to recognize that many of our travelers here at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport have disabilities and enhancements like GoodMaps ensure they are able to safely and efficiently navigate and access our airport,” said Mayor John Cowen Jr., City of Brownsville. “GoodMaps is a big win for us all. This innovative navigation and web mapping platform is using advanced technology like computer vision and artificial intelligence to provide precise indoor navigation and wayfinding solutions.”
The launch of GoodMaps aligns with the City of Brownsville’s broader efforts to modernize public facilities while prioritizing accessibility, technology integration, and customer service excellence.
“Through our partnership with GoodMaps, our airport is improving independent mobility throughout our facilitiy,” said Faisal Khalifa, Interim Airport Director. “This will help passengers with visual impairments to move through ticketing, security, gates, restrooms, and other key areas with greater ease and dignity. Passengers may navigate the airport independently and confidently, without requiring additional physical infrastructure.”
