There’s something magical about reading aloud, especially when your audience has paws, whiskers, and a wagging tail.
At the Brownsville Public Library, young readers are discovering that books become even more exciting when shared with furry friends. Reading Buddies, a beloved monthly program, brings children and shelter pets together for an hour of storytelling, confidence-building, and heartwarming connection.
Inside the library, you’ll find readers sitting proudly with a book in hand while a gentle dog rests nearby. There’s no pressure, no grades, just encouragement, companionship, and the quiet joy of turning pages together.
The program is designed to help children strengthen their reading skills in a relaxed setting. Reading to animals helps build confidence and fluency because pets are patient listeners. They don’t interrupt. They don’t correct. They simply enjoy the moment and the company.
For the shelter pets, the experience is just as special. The extra attention, soothing voices, and social interaction provide comfort and enrichment while they wait for their forever homes.
Families are encouraged to arrive on time so every young reader has the chance to meet these lovable listeners.
