IDEA Public Schools and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley have launched Classroom IDEAL, an early autism-intervention program that will debut at IDEA Quest Academy during the 2026-27 school year.
The two-year initiative is supported by a grant of more than million from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. UTRGV will study the program’s impact on communication, social functioning, adaptive behaviors, self-help skills and fine motor development.
Classroom IDEAL will serve up to 45 children ages 5 to 7 each year who have an autism diagnosis. The program will include three specialized classrooms, each limited to 15 students, with certified special education teachers, paraprofessionals and an embedded team of behavioral, speech-language and occupational-therapy specialists.
The program also will provide parent training and support the development of a regional model for educators. A related initiative is expected to train 200 teachers and paraprofessionals across 11 school districts over two years.
