RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas — IDEA Public Schools and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley are launching Classroom IDEAL, an early autism intervention program that will bring specialized therapeutic services into the school day at IDEA Quest Academy.
Classroom IDEAL, short for Individuals Dedicated to Excellence, Achievement and Learning for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, will begin during the 2026-27 school year. A grant of more than $1 million from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will support the initiative for two years.
The program will serve 45 children ages 5 to 7 with an autism diagnosis each year, reaching as many as 90 students during the grant period. Three classrooms will be limited to 15 students each and staffed by a certified special education teacher and two paraprofessionals.
Classroom staff will work with board-certified behavior analysts, registered behavior technicians, speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists. The model is intended to integrate individualized therapy with regular classroom instruction so students can practice communication, social, adaptive, self-help and fine-motor skills throughout the school day.
Dr. Noe Ramos, an associate professor in UTRGV’s College of Education and P-16 Integration, will serve as principal investigator. UTRGV will study whether the high-frequency model accelerates learning, supports classroom behavior and improves students’ developmental progress.
“Research consistently demonstrates that young children on the autism spectrum make the greatest gains when provided with intensive early interventions,” Ramos said in the university’s announcement.
UTRGV said the project aims for at least 75% of participating students to show measurable improvement across its key developmental areas. A university program director will monitor treatment fidelity and student goals, while a graduate research assistant will collect data from educators, therapists and families.
Parents will also receive training in the evidence-based strategies used at school so children can continue practicing skills at home and in community settings.
The classrooms will complement Teacher FACTT, another Ramos-led project that will train 200 teachers and paraprofessionals from 11 South Texas school districts in functional communication strategies grounded in applied behavior analysis.
