Many people rinse with water immediately after brushing, but dental guidance says that habit can wash away fluoride before it has time to protect tooth enamel.
CNET reports that dentists generally recommend spitting out excess toothpaste instead of rinsing right away. Fluoride left on the teeth can continue strengthening enamel and helping prevent cavities.
People who use a fluoride mouthwash should follow the product directions rather than use it immediately after brushing, because doing so may also dilute or remove toothpaste fluoride. Anyone with specific dental concerns should ask a dentist for personalized advice.
