Brownsville residents are encouraged to take precautions today as a combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to create potentially dangerous heat conditions across the area.
According to the National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley, heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees for several hours this afternoon and into the evening. A few locations could briefly experience heat index values of 111 degrees or higher.
With the heat index making conditions feel significantly hotter, residents who work, exercise, or spend extended periods outdoors should take steps to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
If you plan to be outside:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
- Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day when possible.
- Check on family members, neighbors, older adults, and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
Residents are also reminded that young children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time. Vehicle interiors can quickly reach life-threatening temperatures.
Heat-related illness can develop quickly. Pay attention to how you and those around you are feeling while outdoors and move to a cooler location when necessary.
As temperatures climb this afternoon, the City of Brownsville encourages the community to stay weather-aware, stay hydrated, and take the heat seriously.
