BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Kiki’s Restaurant, a longtime Brownsville dining spot, is closing after 22 years in business, according to the family behind the restaurant.
The family said it had been managing a difficult tax situation following audits by the Texas Comptroller’s office. It said large monthly payments, payroll obligations and other operating costs contributed to falling behind on rent.
The family said the closure was not driven by a lack of customers. For many residents, the restaurant had been a gathering place for family celebrations and routine meals over more than two decades.
The final closure marks another change in Brownsville’s local restaurant landscape, where longtime independently owned businesses continue to face rising operating costs and changing financial pressures.
