BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Mayor John Cowen Jr. said Brownsville is evaluating between 10 and 15 large industrial projects that could bring an estimated 60,000 jobs to the city over the next decade.
Cowen made the comments during an advanced manufacturing gathering organized by UTRGV’s Institute for Advanced Manufacturing. The event brought manufacturing firms to downtown Brownsville to discuss investment, expansion and regional workforce needs.
He pointed to continuing development in aerospace, energy and maritime manufacturing, citing SpaceX at Starbase, NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG project and Saronic’s planned autonomous maritime manufacturing complex as examples of the region’s industrial growth.
Cowen said the scale of prospective development will require coordination among educational institutions, government agencies and private employers to prepare local residents for jobs in welding, engineering, robotics, software, fabrication and other technical fields.
