Body of Missing Kayaker Recovered Off South Padre Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Cameron County Park Rangers and Texas Game Wardens recovered the body of a kayaker who had been reported missing off South Padre Island over Labor Day weekend.

Officials identified the man as William Raney, 59, of Midland. He was recovered about 2:21 p.m. Tuesday after a multi-day search, according to reports citing county officials.

The search began Saturday after a citizen alerted a park ranger about a kayaker who had been seen offshore and was no longer visible near Cameron County Beach Access No. 6. The U.S. Coast Guard initially searched with two aircraft and a boat before local agencies continued the effort.

Officials said Raney’s next of kin had been notified. The circumstances of his death remain under investigation.
