The City of Brownsville is preparing to begin a major modernization project at City Hall that will improve critical building systems while ensuring city services remain available to the public throughout construction. The project includes significant upgrades to the building's heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, electrical service, and network infrastructure, helping modernize City Hall to better serve employees and residents for years to come.
To minimize disruptions, renovations will be completed one floor at a time, with affected departments temporarily relocating to the Cummings Middle School campus on a rotating schedule while work is underway. Construction is scheduled to begin on the fifth floor in December 2026 before progressing through each level of the building. The final phase, involving the first floor, is expected to be completed in March 2028.
The current renovation schedule includes: Fifth Floor: December 2026 – March 2027 Fourth Floor: March – June 2027 (Office of Organizational Development and Human Resources) Second Floor: May – August 2027 (City Manager's Office and Legal Department) Third Floor: August – November 2027 (Finance Department) First Floor: November 2027 – March 2028 (Procurement Department, United States Postal Service, and Brownsville City Employees Credit Union) Officials will provide advance notice before each phase begins, including information about temporary office locations, public access, and any changes to department operations.
Updates, relocation details, and project timelines will be shared through the City's official social media channels and other communication platforms to help residents continue accessing services with as little disruption as possible. The modernization project is part of the City's ongoing commitment to investing in public facilities, improving operational efficiency, and providing high-quality service to the Brownsville community.
