The City of Brownsville has been recognized for its commitment to keeping the community clean, beautiful, and environmentally sustainable by receiving the 2026 Governor's Community Achievement Award, one of the highest environmental honors presented by Keep Texas Beautiful. The prestigious award recognizes Texas communities that demonstrate outstanding achievement in community beautification, litter prevention, waste reduction, recycling, and environmental stewardship.
Brownsville earned the distinction through the collective efforts of city staff, volunteers, community organizations, businesses, and residents who participated in cleanup and beautification initiatives throughout the year. In 2025, the City hosted 34 cleanup and beautification events, bringing together more than 1,200 volunteers who helped remove more than 51,000 pounds of litter and debris from neighborhoods, parks, roadways, and public spaces. The award also brings a significant investment back to the community.
As part of the recognition, Brownsville will receive a $310,000 landscaping project funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The project will enhance the appearance of a state-maintained roadway, further supporting the City's ongoing beautification efforts. City officials say the award reflects Brownsville's commitment to creating a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming community while encouraging residents to take an active role in protecting the environment.
The Governor's Community Achievement Award not only recognizes Brownsville's accomplishments over the past year but also reinforces the City's long-term commitment to sustainability, civic pride, and enhancing the quality of life for everyone who calls Brownsville home.
