Brownsville builds digital map to help families find Old City Cemetery graves

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The city is developing a digital map of burial plots at Old City Cemetery, a project intended to help families locate graves and preserve records at one of Brownsville’s oldest burial grounds.

The cemetery, at 955 E. Fifth St., dates to about 1850 and includes thousands of plots. The exact number of people buried there is uncertain, in part because time and weather have damaged or erased some markers.

City staff and volunteers are documenting headstones, photographs and records for a mobile-friendly map. Volunteer Valerie Garza has helped compile and verify information for individual gravesites, while Joshua Gutierrez, the city’s records and information management coordinator, is leading the project.

The mapping work was about halfway complete as of Oct. 19. The city hopes to make the tool available through its website by late December or early January.
