The City of Brownsville has unveiled a new public mural that celebrates the culture, pride, and unique binational identity that define the Brownsville community. Brownsville was selected to receive a custom mural through the Star-Spangled Texas Mural Competition, a statewide initiative celebrating America250. The city was the only community in South Texas chosen for this distinguished honor. The mural is located on the side wall of El Gran Mercado, at the corner of East 12th Street and East Elizabeth Street, where it now serves as a vibrant new landmark for residents and visitors alike.
The artwork was designed and painted by artists Shek Vega and Nick Soup of Los Otros Mural Agency in San Antonio. The artists recently traveled to Brownsville to complete the installation, engaging with community members throughout the creative process. "It’s always fun to paint in public because you get to see their reaction in real time, how people feel about it, if they are smiling, if they are intrigued. They are inquisitive about what you are painting," said artist Shek Vega.
The mural features a colorful backdrop inspired by regional textiles and centers on a young couple dressed in traditional Mexican attire, reflecting the rich binational identity shared by Brownsville and Matamoros. The couple is depicted enjoying a special moment together over a Coca-Cola, symbolizing connection, community, and shared traditions. The Star-Spangled Texas Mural Competition was created by Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages in partnership with Texas Monthly Studio. The statewide initiative recognizes communities that demonstrate creativity, civic pride, and a strong sense of community as they commemorate the America250 celebration.
