BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A local nonprofit will hold a free legal workshop Saturday to help families of children with disabilities prepare for decisions and documentation that may become necessary as a child approaches adulthood.
The session is scheduled for Sept. 5 at Brownsville’s main library. Down by the Border said the workshop will cover supported decision-making agreements, powers of attorney, guardianship and special-needs trusts.
Dolores Zarate, president of Down by the Border, said families frequently request guidance about documents needed when a child with a disability turns 18 and schools begin requiring authorization from a parent or another legally designated decision-maker.
The organization reported that 100 people had registered and 20 spaces remained when the workshop was announced. Assistance will be available for Spanish-speaking families.
