WESLACO, Texas – Hidalgo County officials and community partners will convene regional leaders Sept. 3 to discuss increasing hunger across the Rio Grande Valley and identify immediate steps to help families.
The event, titled Hunger in the RGV – A Call to Action, is scheduled from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the South Texas College Mid-Valley Campus auditorium in Weslaco.
Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez said thousands of Valley families struggle to put food on the table each month. Many rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.
The meeting will bring together elected officials and representatives from business, education, nonprofit, health care and faith organizations to examine the causes and consequences of food insecurity.
Cortez’s office, South Texas College and Bread for the World are hosting the program. Organizers said the goal is to move beyond describing the problem and identify actions local institutions can take together.
