Port Isabel Tarpons Show Strength in Scrimmage Against St. Joseph Academy

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Port Isabel displayed balance on offense and a strong defensive finish during an Aug. 13 football scrimmage against St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville.

The scrimmage included four controlled 10-minute quarters followed by two live 12-minute quarters. St. Joseph scored first, but Port Isabel quarterback Grayson Estes answered with touchdown passes to Ryan Cinfuegos and Logan Bennett.

After St. Joseph tied the controlled portion at 2-2, the Tarpons put together a 70-yard scoring drive. Running back Elijah Alvarez supplied a 26-yard gain as Port Isabel finished the controlled segment with a 3-2 advantage.

In the live period, Port Isabel’s defense forced a punt and recorded two sacks. The Tarpons then drove from their own 36-yard line, with Jesus Ramos scoring on a 30-yard run. Port Isabel held the 7-0 lead through the remainder of the live action.

Defensive coordinator Albert Barbarena III said the unit showed greater poise but still had areas to improve. He singled out defensive tackle Jay Valdez for his performance.

Port Isabel also used the scrimmage to work on its passing game. Estes produced 106 passing yards and two touchdowns during the early drives, while the offense added 31 rushing yards and another score.
