Rio Grande LNG Train 6 Clears Army Corps Permit Hurdle at Port of Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – NextDecade has received a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit for a proposed sixth liquefied natural gas production unit at its Rio Grande LNG project near the Port of Brownsville, advancing the project through a key federal review step.

The permit covers the planned Train 6 expansion and a third marine berth at the facility along the Brownsville Ship Channel. It does not amount to a final investment decision or a commitment to construct the unit.

NextDecade has said it is targeting the second half of 2027 for a possible final investment decision on Train 6. Additional regulatory work, financing and commercial arrangements would be required before the expansion could move forward.

The existing Rio Grande LNG project is being developed in Cameron County. A sixth train would add to the facility’s planned export capacity and could bring additional construction and port-related activity to the region if approved for development.
