BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A group of Texas Southmost College students and faculty members are working to bring new life to the TSC Community Garden and Greenhouse while providing fresh produce to members of the community.
The revived TSC Garden Club aims to grow food for the TSC Food Pantry, with a long-term vision of expanding the garden and greenhouse as a botanical research center.
Biology Instructor Dr. Melva Avalos said students expressed interest in reviving the club after visiting the area over the summer. Avalos and fellow Biology Instructor Tara Hansler are sponsoring the club, along with Physics Instructor Martha Casquete, as they restore the garden and greenhouse.
The community garden began as an initiative between TSC and the Brownsville Wellness Coalition using a 2022 grant. Architecture students developed the garden blueprints, Construction students built garden beds and support structures, and volunteers helped plant and harvest produce for distribution through the TSC Food Pantry.
Garden Club Treasurer Denisse Galvan said the project gives students a way to explore agriculture and help others. Club President Adrian Larrasquitu helps coordinate student schedules and represents the club at campus events.
Members meet Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and at various times during the week to maintain the garden and greenhouse. TSC students and community members interested in joining can contact Dr. Melva Avalos or club president Adrian Larrasquitu through the college.
