The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation, in partnership with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, hosted a “Permitting Made Simple” class aimed at helping local business owners better understand grease trap requirements and city ordinances before opening their doors.
The educational session focused on proper grease trap installation, maintenance, and compliance with City of Brownsville regulations. The workshop is part of BCIC’s continued effort to simplify the permitting process and provide entrepreneurs with the information they need to operate safely and successfully in the community.
Grease traps play a critical role in protecting the city’s wastewater system by preventing fats, oils, and grease, commonly known as FOG, from entering sewer lines. Without proper systems in place, grease buildup can cause blockages, sanitary sewer overflows, costly repairs, and environmental concerns.
During the presentation, BPUB representatives explained why grease traps are required for certain food service establishments and outlined inspection standards, maintenance schedules, and common violations to avoid.
“We do get a lot of customers who think they can just open up a kitchen because they have their grandma’s recipe, but they don’t realize that there are safety procedures that need to be met and why the permitting process is in place — to make sure that these safety features and regulations required by the state are met,” said Daniel Guerra, senior environmental compliance specialist with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board.
Guerra added that understanding these requirements early can prevent major setbacks for new business owners.
