Brownsville Residents Advised to Prepare for Weekend Heat

Brownsville residents are encouraged to take extra precautions as hot temperatures and high humidity are expected to continue through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley.

A Moderate, Level 2 of 4, Heat Risk is in place today, with pockets of Major, Level 3 of 4, Heat Risk expected across the Rio Grande Valley this weekend as temperatures continue to climb.

These conditions can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

In Brownsville, daytime highs are expected to reach around 95 degrees each day. Because of the humidity, however, it will feel much hotter. The heat index, or “feels like” temperature, is forecast to reach about 103 degrees today, 104 degrees on Friday, and around 103 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

If you’re planning to be outside, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned space. Whenever possible, save strenuous outdoor activities for the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower.

The National Weather Service also reminds residents to never leave children, older adults, or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time. Temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerous within minutes.

It’s also a good idea to check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

The City of Brownsville encourages residents to stay informed by signing up for the City’s Emergency Alert System, which delivers important notifications about severe weather, public safety incidents, and other emergencies. Residents can register through the City’s website or by visiting the Emergency Alert System registration page.
