Saronic Selects Brownsville for $3.2 Billion Port Alpha Shipyard Project

Saronic Technologies has selected Brownsville for Port Alpha, a planned advanced shipyard project expected to bring a $3.2 billion investment to the Port of Brownsville area.

The project is expected to create 10,000 jobs at full buildout and further expand Brownsville’s role in advanced manufacturing, maritime technology and autonomous vessel production.

Port Alpha is planned as a highly automated shipyard designed to produce medium and large autonomous surface vessels. Saronic, based in Austin, develops unmanned maritime systems for defense and commercial applications.

The Greater Brownsville EDC said the project is expected to generate an estimated $168.4 billion in economic impact across Cameron County over the life of the project. That estimate includes about $1.6 billion in economic activity during construction and roughly $5.6 billion annually over 30 years of operations.

The project is also expected to generate more than $203 million in fiscal impact for the City of Brownsville. Greater Brownsville EDC said it has committed $10 million toward workforce development initiatives to help prepare local residents for jobs tied to the project.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen welcomed the company to the city and said the project is expected to create new opportunities for local workers, students, businesses and families. Cowen said Brownsville is ready to support the company’s growth and help build the future of maritime manufacturing in South Texas.

The proposed site has been tied to a long-term lease option on nearly 4,400 acres from the Brownsville Navigation District. Local and state incentive packages reported for the project include Cameron County tax abatements, Point Isabel ISD property tax relief and support from the Greater Brownsville Economic Development Corp.

The Port of Brownsville has increasingly drawn major industrial, energy, logistics and technology-related projects because of its deepwater access, available land, proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and location near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Greater Brownsville EDC also said it is developing the Greater Brownsville Tech Park, a 700-acre industrial park intended to support suppliers and manufacturers connected to companies such as Saronic Technologies and SpaceX.

If the project moves forward as planned, Port Alpha would add another major technology and manufacturing employer to the lower Texas coast, near other high-profile industrial and aerospace activity in Cameron County.
