Emergency vehicles, first responders, and increased activity will be visible at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport on Friday, October 14, 2026, as agencies come together for a large-scale emergency preparedness exercise designed to strengthen coordination and readiness.
The airport will conduct its FAA Part 139 Triennial Full-Scale Emergency Exercise from 9:00 AM to noon on airport property and within designated exercise areas.
The exercise will simulate an aircraft emergency requiring a coordinated response from airport personnel, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting personnel, law enforcement, emergency medical services, hospitals, mutual aid agencies, and other supporting organizations.
The realistic scenario will give participating agencies an opportunity to practice critical emergency procedures, communications, and interagency coordination in a controlled environment. Exercises such as this help responders evaluate emergency plans, identify opportunities for improvement, and strengthen the partnerships necessary for an effective response during a real emergency.
Members of the public may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles and first responders in and around the airport during the exercise period. This activity is part of a planned training exercise and does not represent an actual emergency.
The Federal Aviation Administration requires certificated airports to conduct a full-scale emergency exercise at least once every 36 consecutive calendar months under 14 CFR Part 139. The exercise tests an airport’s emergency plan and provides participating organizations with hands-on experience responding to a simulated aircraft incident.
