A clinical rotation can give a student more than hands-on experience. It can also help them find their first job in health care.
In the first episode of TSC Business Connect, Ricardo Treviño, Texas Southmost College’s director of Industry Relations and Outreach, speaks with TSC alumna Rita Guerrero of South Texas Rehabilitation Hospital about rehabilitation care, career opportunities and the hospital’s partnership with the college.
Guerrero explains that rehabilitation teams help patients regain the ability to manage everyday activities after an illness or injury. That work calls for nurses and therapists, as well as patient care technicians, respiratory therapists, medical coders, dietary staff, environmental services employees and others.
The conversation turns to the value of hiring people who know the Rio Grande Valley. Guerrero describes employees who began as patient care technicians and continued their education to become licensed vocational nurses or registered nurses. She also explains how TSC students complete clinical rotations at the hospital, giving students and staff a chance to work together before hiring decisions are made.
One recent trainee made a strong impression during her rotation. Although there was no opening at the Brownsville hospital, Guerrero said the student was hired at its sister facility in Weslaco.
For students considering health care, Guerrero’s message is that there are many ways to enter the field and grow. She encourages employers to build relationships with TSC before an immediate staffing need arises, so they can help prepare local talent for future opportunities.
