BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Cameron County voters delivered results in the 2026 midterms that differed from the broader slate of candidates and causes supported by Elon Musk, despite the close association between Musk’s SpaceX operations and the county’s Starbase area.
Election coverage examining the county’s vote found that Democrats performed strongly in Cameron County while Musk spent heavily in Texas and national political contests. The result illustrates a familiar feature of South Texas elections: local political decisions can be shaped by economic concerns, border policy, public services, candidate relationships and turnout efforts that do not necessarily mirror the preferences of prominent business figures.
Starbase, the SpaceX launch and production site near Boca Chica, remains a major local economic and public-policy presence. Its operations have brought jobs, construction, tourism interest and national attention, while also prompting continuing discussion about beach access, environmental regulation, road closures and the relationship between private development and public infrastructure.
Political spending can increase advertising, staffing and voter outreach, but it does not determine an election outcome on its own. County-level results reflect the choices of voters in individual races, and statewide spending does not always translate into the same response in every community.
The 2026 vote follows a period of shifting political coalitions in South Texas. Cameron County supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, while the latest midterm results showed a different pattern in the contests reviewed after Election Day. Official canvassing and certification remain the final record for each race.
