Brownsville Officials Take Action Against Mosquitoes After Heavy Rain

With recent rainfall across the area, the City of Brownsville is reminding residents to take steps now to help prevent mosquito breeding in their neighborhoods. The Department of Health, Wellness, and Animal Services is canvassing the community to identify areas with standing water. Crews are applying larvicide where needed to help stop mosquitoes before they become a larger problem. Standing water is one of the most common places mosquitoes breed. Items such as flowerpots, planters, bowls, buckets, old tires, empty cans, clogged rain gutters, and saucers under potted plants can quickly collect rainwater and become breeding grounds.

Residents are encouraged to keep lawns trimmed, empty containers regularly, and check their property after rain. The City is also reminding the public to follow the 5 D’s of mosquito prevention: DEET: Use insect repellent containing DEET. DRESS: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors. DAWN, DAYTIME, AND DUSK: Mosquitoes are most active during these times. Avoid being outside when possible to reduce bites. DRAIN: Remove standing water from containers, gutters, tires, buckets, and other areas where water collects. DOCTOR: Contact a physician if you feel sick after being bitten. City officials say mosquito prevention is a shared effort, and every resident can help by removing standing water around their home.
