BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Cameron County is developing a master drainage plan intended to identify flood-prone areas and rank projects that could reduce future flooding.
Engineers are reviewing rainfall measurements, high-water marks, imagery and flooding reports from the March 2025 Rio Grande Valley storm. That information will be combined with other historical records to model which homes, roads and critical facilities could be at risk during storms of different intensities.
Augusto Sanchez Gonzalez, Cameron County’s director of resilience and natural resources, said residents’ experiences are important because existing records do not always capture conditions in every neighborhood.
“Certain families know their community very well. They know the issues very well. And so we need to get that input,” Sanchez Gonzalez said.
Proposed projects will be ranked using factors including threats to life, potential property damage, flooding frequency, effects on critical facilities and the number of people and structures affected.
The county plans to hold public workshops and announce participation opportunities through its website and social media accounts. Specific workshop dates had not been announced when the report was published.
