SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — DHR Health’s 20th annual Fishing for Hope Tournament raised $524,130 to support healthcare services for uninsured and underserved Rio Grande Valley residents.
The Aug. 22 tournament brought approximately 900 anglers and more than 180 boats to Jim’s Pier and the Laguna Madre on South Padre Island.
Proceeds benefit Hope Family Health Center in McAllen, where volunteer physicians, healthcare professionals and staff provide free services to patients who otherwise may have limited access to care.
Fishing for Hope began two decades ago as a community fundraiser built around recreational fishing. It has since grown into one of the larger nonprofit fishing tournaments on the Texas coast and has raised millions of dollars for Hope Family Health Center.
The anniversary event included fishing competitions, raffles and community fundraising. DHR Health said the tournament’s growth reflects continued support from participants, employees, volunteers and sponsors.
