HARLINGEN, Texas – City officials are reminding residents and contractors to obtain required permits before beginning construction, renovation or major repair work.
Harlingen’s permit guide says approval generally is required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move or demolish a building or to change how a structure is occupied. Permits also may be required for electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing and structural work governed by city codes.
A permit gives the city an opportunity to review plans and inspect work for compliance with minimum safety standards. Inspections can help identify unsafe wiring, plumbing problems, structural deficiencies and other issues before they are covered or the project is completed.
Work that requires a permit generally must be performed by licensed contractors who are registered with the city. Property owners should verify requirements before signing a contract or purchasing materials because permit needs vary by project.
The city code requires separate authorization for certain electrical work and calls for inspections as work progresses. Starting a project without required approval can lead to delays, added fees or corrective work.
