A new on-demand transit option will roll out in Brownsville beginning November 1. BMetro officially launches the Route 30 Uber Ride Share, a pilot program that replaces the city’s fixed bus route in the southeast area with Uber-powered rides.
The program, developed through a partnership between the City of Brownsville and Uber, is designed to modernize public transportation by offering residents greater flexibility and convenience.
Under the new service, riders can request an UberX or UberXL trip using the Uber app and travel anywhere within the designated Route 30 service zone. All rides that start and end within the eligible area will be complimentary, courtesy of Cameron County and the City of Brownsville. Trips that leave the service area will not qualify for free rides.
“This partnership represents a new chapter in how we think about public transportation,” said Gennie Garcia, Director of Brownsville Metro. “By combining innovation with accessibility, we’re expanding mobility options for our community and making it easier for residents to get where they need to go.”
To participate, riders must have the Uber app on their smartphone, or they can call (833) USE-UBER or(833) 873-8237 if they do not have one. Riders must download a monthly BMetro Route 30 voucher by clicking the voucher link below or searching “Brownsville” in the Vouchers section of the Uber Wallet. The voucher will apply automatically at checkout for trips within the service area. Before booking, riders should ensure their payment method lists “BMetro Route 30” in the app.
The service is open to anyone aged 13 and older, and teens between 13 and 17 must use Uber Teen with parental permission. Riders can travel Monday through Saturday from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Sundays from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, reflecting regular BMetro operating hours.
Accessibility remains a key feature of the program. UberX supports screen reader tools such as TalkBack and VoiceOver, ensuring usability for riders who are blind or have low vision. Service animals are accepted, and riders are encouraged to report any denials.
Riders can contact BMetro at (956) 548-6050 for questions or feedback. Uber-related support is available through the app or at help.uber.com/riders. More information, including the Route 30 service map and voucher QR code, is available here: https://www.brownsvilletx.gov/700/Route-30-Southeast.
The final day for the traditional Route 30 bus service is October 31, 2025.
