Brownsville and Matamoros Realtor Groups Sign Cross-Border Agreement

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Real estate organizations in Brownsville and Matamoros have signed a memorandum of understanding intended to create a more organized professional network for property transactions and investment across the Texas-Mexico border.

The Brownsville-South Padre Island Board of Realtors hosted the inaugural Binational Forum at its Brownsville headquarters with the Matamoros chapter of the Asociacion Mexicana de Profesionales Inmobiliarios. Brokers, developers, title professionals and public officials from both countries attended.

The agreement calls for the organizations to collaborate on comparative market information, industry statistics and regional economic trends. It also establishes a framework for cross-border client referrals, joint training and international professional certifications.

The groups said members will exchange information about property law, land use, title procedures and foreign-investment requirements. Those rules differ between the United States and Mexico and can complicate transactions for buyers who are unfamiliar with the other country's system.

Speakers included Brownsville Mayor John Cowen; Enrique Salinas, Matamoros' municipal economy secretary; Texas Realtors board Chair Jennifer Wauhob; AMPI national President Jenny Rivas; National Association of Realtors global ambassador Esteban Flores; and Texas Realtors global committee Chair Pius Dawson.

Organizers connected the partnership to industrial expansion, nearshoring and infrastructure investment in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and northern Tamaulipas. They said continued meetings would focus on professional relationships, market confidence and practical information for clients on both sides of the border.

The forum was organized with support from the Brownsville board's Global Committee and industry partners. No specific development project or public expenditure was approved as part of the agreement.
