BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The U.S. Navy has awarded Saronic a contract to build Landing Craft Utility vessels at the company’s planned Port Alpha shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, according to a company release.
The contract is a significant early development for the shipyard project, which Saronic announced in July. The company has said Port Alpha is intended to produce autonomous maritime vessels and other next-generation shipbuilding products.
The project is expected to bring major industrial activity to the port, though the company has not released a construction timeline for the first vessels under the Navy contract.
