City Commission highlights from the June 17, 2025, City Commission meeting

The City of Brownsville officially welcomed two city commissioners during a ceremonial swearing-in at the June 17 City Commission meeting, following the June 7 municipal runoff election.

Commissioner Nurith Galonsky Pizana took the oath of office as the newly elected Commissioner At-Large B. At the same time, Commissioner Pedro E. Cardenas was sworn in for a second term representing District 4. Both officials received certificates of election in a packed chamber filled with family, supporters, and city staff.

The commission approved several zoning changes, including:

Dissolution and reestablishment of the Madera Public Improvement District (PID) to correct technical errors.

Rezoning of a parcel on Houston Road to allow higher-density residential development.

A multi-family housing project was approved near North Central Avenue, limited to 34 units and one story in height, following community feedback on traffic and drainage concerns.

City planners assured the public that all development would comply with modern safety, drainage, and infrastructure standards.

The meeting also included a public proclamation recognizing the work of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, particularly in addressing elder abuse. Public officials emphasized the city’s ongoing commitment to supporting its most vulnerable residents and maintaining openness and accountability in governance.
