SAN BENITO, Texas — A Los Fresnos man has pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an October shooting that killed a 21-year-old man and wounded a woman.
Cameron County court records show Miguel Monrreal entered the pleas Aug. 3. The court found that Monrreal was mentally competent and had knowingly and voluntarily waived his rights before entering the pleas.
Records call for a 35-year sentence on the murder charge and a 10-year sentence on the aggravated-assault charge, with the terms running concurrently.
San Benito police responded at about 10:34 p.m. Oct. 3 to a report of shots fired in the 900 block of Stenger Street. Officers found Clemente Medina, 21, and a 24-year-old woman with gunshot wounds. Medina later died at a hospital. The woman was initially listed in critical condition and was later released.
Investigators said the shooting followed a verbal and physical confrontation involving a group of people. Police arrested Monrreal the following night as he attempted to cross the B&M International Bridge. He was later charged with murder and aggravated assault and held on $1.5 million bail.
