Across Brownsville, the City’s Engineering and Public Works Department is tackling road work on multiple fronts, from neighborhood resurfacing projects to larger corridor upgrades.
City crews are currently working on mill-and-overlay projects along Villa Del Mar and a section of Robindale north of FM 802. The work is designed to extend the life of the roadway and provide a smoother driving surface for the public.
“Milling is milling off the old asphalt. The old asphalt, you mill it off, you take it off. And then overlays, when you come back and repave it with new asphalt, create a smooth driving surface for the public,” said Carlos Lastra with Engineering and Public Works.
The City handles this work in-house using its own milling and paving equipment, which helps reduce costs and allows crews to move projects forward more efficiently.
On Coffee Road, a full reconstruction project is underway, with safety as a major focus. The traffic signal at Paredes Line Road and Coffee Road is being upgraded to meet current standards. The project also includes new ADA ramps and roadway widening.
Near the hike-and-bike trail, the City is improving the pedestrian crossing to better serve walkers, cyclists, and runners.
“Right now it has a flashing beacon. Now we're upgrading it to a more safe pedestrian signal push button. It will actually stop traffic so people can safely walk across Coffee Road on the trail,” Lastra said.
Additional work is also progressing on Old Highway 77, where contractors have completed the concrete apron at Morrison Road and Old 77. Curb work, wastewater improvements, and storm sewer work remain ongoing.
The City is also preparing to break ground on full reconstruction projects on Dennett Road and Old Alice Road.
With construction active in several areas, drivers are asked to follow detour signs, slow down, and watch for workers.
