As National Mosquito Control Awareness Week is recognized from June 21 through June 27, the City of Brownsville is reminding residents that mosquito prevention is a shared effort between the community and the City’s Vector Control team. Mosquito activity typically increases during the summer months, especially after rainfall and in areas where standing water is present. That is why the City’s Department of Health, Wellness and Animal Services continues to monitor mosquito activity across Brownsville through its Vector Control Division. The division uses mosquito traps, surveillance data, and resident reports to help identify areas with higher mosquito activity.
This information helps crews determine where treatment may be needed and how to better respond to mosquito concerns throughout the city. A key part of that effort is led by the City’s medical entomologist, Yaziri Gonzalez. Her work helps the City monitor mosquito populations, identify problem areas, and support prevention efforts aimed at reducing mosquito activity and protecting public health. Residents can also help by using the City’s Brownsville Mosquito Notices app, also known as the Vector Control app.
Through the app, residents can submit mosquito control service requests, view interactive spray maps, receive notifications about mosquito spraying in their area, and stay updated on mosquito-related information. Residents are encouraged to remove standing water from buckets, tires, flowerpots, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and any other containers where water can collect. Even small amounts of standing water can become a breeding site for mosquitoes. Officials are also reminding the community to follow the 5 D’s of mosquito prevention: DEET: Use insect repellent. DRESS: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
DAWN, DAYTIME AND DUSK: Be aware that mosquitoes can be active at different times of the day. DRAIN: Empty standing water around your home. DOCTOR: Contact a physician if you feel sick after being bitten. Other prevention steps include keeping grass trimmed, maintaining yards, repairing window and door screens, and using air conditioning when available to help keep mosquitoes outside. By removing standing water, reporting mosquito concerns, using repellent, and staying informed through the Vector Control app, residents can help reduce mosquito activity and protect their neighborhoods throughout the summer.
