As part of the City's Ready Brownsville initiative, the City of Brownsville is highlighting ongoing investments and proactive measures that help prepare the community for heavy rainfall and potential flooding. The Department of Engineering and Public Works (EPW) has completed a series of drainage improvements over the past several years designed to enhance the city's ability to manage stormwater and reduce flooding impacts. These projects include ditch regrading, culvert replacements, stormwater basin improvements, and targeted drainage upgrades in neighborhoods throughout Brownsville.
Together, these improvements help move water more efficiently through the city's drainage system during periods of heavy rain. “Every storm reminds us how vulnerable our community can be, but it also shows our ongoing drainage projects and new requirements matter. Everything we build, upgrade, and enforce is designed to reduce risk and keep our community’s flood insurance rate as low as possible,” said Assistant City Manager Doroteo Garcia Jr., P.E., CFM, RAS.’ I highly recommend that our citizens purchase flood insurance.
Many of our projects we complete, and the requirements we introduce are to keep our flood insurance rate as low as possible.” While significant rainfall can still cause temporary street flooding, city officials say most affected areas are expected to drain within approximately one to two hours after rainfall slows or stops. That timeframe is consistent with how the city's drainage infrastructure is designed to perform. In addition to infrastructure improvements, EPW crews conduct year-round maintenance and storm preparedness activities.
These efforts include inspecting major drainage ditches, clearing debris from inlets and waterways, and monitoring areas that are more susceptible to flooding. Ahead of forecasted weather events, crews are prepared to stage equipment in strategic locations and respond to drainage concerns as conditions require. City officials say these investments and preparedness efforts are making a measurable difference in strengthening Brownsville's resilience and improving stormwater management citywide.
The Ready Brownsville initiative encourages residents to prepare for severe weather by staying informed, having an emergency plan, and following the City of Brownsville's official social media channels for updates and important public safety information.
