EDINBURG, Texas – DHR Health’s Neuroscience Institute will host a free educational seminar Sept. 19 for stroke survivors, family members and caregivers seeking information about treatment options for limited hand and arm movement after a stroke.
The session is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, 118 Paseo Del Prado. DHR Health neurosurgeon Dr. Juan Torres-Reveron and Michael Auer, director of the DHR Health Neuro Therapy Institute, are scheduled to lead the discussion.
The seminar will focus on Vivistim therapy, a treatment that pairs vagus nerve stimulation with rehabilitation exercises and daily activities. The approach is intended to help improve upper-limb function by strengthening brain connections involved in hand and arm movement, according to DHR Health.
DHR Health said treatment requires collaboration between the neurosurgeon and therapists. Torres-Reveron implants and manages the device, while Neuro Therapy Institute therapists pair stimulation with repetitive, purposeful arm and hand exercises during rehabilitation.
The hospital invited stroke survivors, families and caregivers to attend the free session, ask questions and learn more about the therapy. Registration is available by calling or texting Juli Rodriguez at 281-740-1085 or emailing juli.rodriguez@mobia.com.
