Local Programs Help Older Adults Stay Active, Healthy, and Connected

Across Brownsville, older adults are finding new ways to stay active, build friendships, and maintain healthy lifestyles through a variety of fitness and recreation programs designed with their needs in mind.

At Sunrise Mall, free fitness classes offered through a partnership between Valley Regional Medical Center and the mall provide participants with opportunities to stay moving while enjoying a supportive environment. Classes range from Tai Chi to line dancing, allowing individuals of all fitness levels to participate at their own pace.

“My recommendation is just get up and do it,” said Mariana Tomlinson of Valley Regional Medical Center. “Come in, maybe observe the class if you’re interested and not sure about it. You’re going to see that there’s all different abilities.”

For many participants, the classes offer more than physical activity. They provide an opportunity to socialize, meet new people, and establish routines that contribute to overall well-being.

“We’re staying active and having fun and meeting new people and creating a beautiful relationship with us like dancers,” said one line dance participant.

The City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department also offers a wide range of programs for active and retired adults at the Brownsville Senior Center and community centers throughout the city. Activities include chair exercises, dancing, bingo, wellness programs, and social events designed to encourage both physical activity and community engagement.

“We’re creating an environment where these individuals can come out of their house and socialize with other individuals, their age, their neighbors, and community members, as well as being able to ensure that their body’s moving, their blood is flowing,” said Parks and Recreation Director Sean DePalma.

City officials encourage residents who may be hesitant to try a new class or activity to simply take the first step. Whether it’s a fitness class, social gathering, or recreational program, the goal is to stay active and connected.
