A new poll has found Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa tied at 47% in the 2026 governor’s race, underscoring how closely watched the campaign has become as Election Day approaches.
The N+ Univision poll, released Sept. 9, surveyed 1,000 registered Texas voters from Aug. 27 through Sept. 4. Five percent of respondents were undecided. Because the survey was not a probability sample, the pollster reported an equivalent margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
The results differ from an Aug. 27 Texas Public Opinion Research poll that placed Abbott ahead of Hinojosa, 49% to 42%. Other summer polls also showed a close contest, with Abbott generally holding small leads. The Cook Political Report moved the race from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican” in August.
The N+ Univision survey found 54% of voters named cost of living as a top issue, followed by health care costs and the electric grid at 37% each. Border security and housing costs were each cited by 36% of respondents. The poll also found Abbott with a 44% favorable and 47% unfavorable rating, while Hinojosa was viewed favorably by 42% and unfavorably by 29%.
Among Hispanic voters, the poll found Abbott underwater on favorability, 41% favorable to 50% unfavorable. The survey reported a broader shift toward Democrats since the 2024 election, although voter views and turnout will remain decisive in the final weeks of the race.
